About the Author

Tom Mitchell

Tom Mitchell is a seasoned animal behaviorist with over 30 years of experience working with a diverse range of animals. This includes puppies and dogs, service animals, wild wolves, zoo animals, aggressive house cats, and Olympic equestrian teams.

Tom has dedicated his career to promoting positive training techniques. This is in contrast to punishment-based methods. The use of choke, shock, and pinch collars, as well as yelling and hitting a dog have been proven to cause aggression. [123] More importantly, dominated dogs are more likely to be aggressive towards children. [4]

Tom also challenges the “Alpha Dog” theory, which has been promoted by celebrity dog trainers. This myth is outdated and refuted by recent research by the scientific community[5] and veterinary organizations such as the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior.[6] Instead of acting as a dominant “Alpha,” Tom encourages dog guardians to treat their dogs with respect. This method builds lasting relationships between humans and animals, built on trust and understanding.

Tom is the author of multiple books, including:

  • “1 Minute Dog Training: The Complete Guide to the Fun, Fast, and Easy Way to Train Your Perfect Dog” Published October, 2023
  • “Fun, Fast & Easy Dog Training for Kids: Super Dog Training Academy” Best Seller, Published May 2024
  • “Puppy Potty Training Academy for the Whole Family” Coming Soon!
  • “Puppy Training Academy: The World’s Fastest and Easiest Training Method” Coming Soon!

As the creator of the renowned 1 Minute Dog Training method, Tom emphasizes that consistency is the key to success in working with dogs. After training countless dogs, he discovered that people are more likely to do short, 1 minute training sessions rather than find the time for a 20 to 30 minute training session.

In fact, short, focused training sessions that prioritize patience and positive reinforcement produce outstanding results. Couple those concepts with daily consistency of a few 1 minute sessions a day, and that adds up to one hundred training sessions in the course of a month.

With a deep commitment to kindness and respect in dog training, Tom’s work has earned him recognition as a leading authority in the field. He has conducted house calls with celebrity clients and served as a TTouch practitioner in the 1980s and 1990s, collaborating closely with Linda Tellington-Jones in promoting the Tellington TTouch® method in Olympic Equestrian teams, Guide Dogs for the Blind, 4-H, and a multitude of other venues.

In his latest book, “Fun, Fast & Easy Dog Training for Kids: Super Dog Training Academy,” Tom aims to empower young dog lovers to become Super Dog Trainers. By providing simple steps, Tom seeks to inspire children and families to deepen their bond with their puppies and dogs while promoting a kinder future for dog training.

“Dogs are incredibly intelligent and emotional beings. They deserve to be trained with kindness and respect. In my experience, children are the most open-minded to my gentle training approach. By having a positive impact on children, my hope is that the future of dog training will be much kinder.” -Tom Mitchell, Book Author

Author Mitchell, creator of the 1 Minute Dog Training method, shares his tips on dog training through the engaging narrative of the playful Roxy, a Belgian Mailnois, who highlights the many ways her owners/family trained her, plus some surprising history of human/canine bonding. Mitchell and Roxy make the case that, just as kids learn their ABCs, dogs can master their own SSCs, as in sit, stay, and come. Through learning these basic commands, pers will be primed and ready for more that will aid during meal time, walks outside, and meeting other dogs. Highlighting the importance of tone of voice, verbal and hand requests instead of commands, and positive reinforcements, Fun, Fast & Easy Dog Training for Kids lays out a clear and fun road map for building bonds and encouraging good behavior.

Emanuel Pretonari’s lively illustrations burst with doggo character, and Mitchell deftly packs lots of practical information and advice in a minimum of words, sometimes in Roxy’s voice, and with frequent “Let’s Review” sections reinforcing key points. Methods such as Tellington TTouches, created by Linda Tellington-Jones—a soothing method of making small circles with the tips of your fingers to calm your dog in moments of fear or excitement—are explained with crisp clarity. Dog lovers and dog owners will find this engaging educational book an valued resource for training and loving furry friends.”

Written from the perspective of Roxy, the author’s Belgian Malinois, this manual takes kids through the many different aspects of dog ownership—including the basics of training pets in very brief blocks of time, how to speak to them, how to approach potty training, and much more. Mitchell, a professional dog trainer, tells readers all about the different “superpowers” dogs have, including having super-strong hearing and being “a good protector.” This framework is an engaging way for kids to think about their pets and learn more about their abilities. Roxy’s voice is fun and accessible and will entertain children by giving them a chance to interact with a dog talking to them in the first person. The “1 Minute Dog Training” method also adapts well to kids—they can get involved with training their pets and build good habits, even with short attention spans. The training methods focus on positive reinforcement and highlight the importance of treating dogs with respect and kindness—an important thing for children to learn. Additionally, included QR codes link to related videos with training demonstrations and tips, adding a helpful tool for kids who are more interactive learners (with caregivers’ permission). Pretonari’s colorful, cute full-color cartoon illustrations of a variety of dogs throughout underline the concepts shared in each chapter, enhancing the reading experience and providing additional context. The book also includes background information about how dogs are descended from wolves and lived alongside people to become humans’ “best friends,” which adds another educational layer. With an emphasis on patience and understanding, this manual communicates important lessons that children may apply to other parts of their lives. An accessible and engaging dog training guidebook that teaches kids about responsible pet ownership.”
