For over three decades, I’ve been on a mission to bridge the communication gap between humans and our furry companions. And let me tell you, it all started with the incredible Tellington TTouch® method developed by the brilliant Linda Tellington-Jones.

We’re talking way back in the 80s. Linda and I even traveled with the Olympic Equestrian team, sharing the magic of TTouch with some magnificent horses.

Witnessing the impact of the TTouch sparked a passion in me. I made it my goal to promote this technique to busy people with dogs. And that’s really how the 1 Minute Dog Training Method was born! I asked myself: How can people spend just 1 minute at a time connecting with their dog?
There are a handful of ways you can communicate with your dog: through body language, tone of voice, word choice, and of course, touch! I’ve found that the deepest relationships are formed by using all forms of communication.
Here at 1 Minute Dog Training, we use positive body language, a respectful tone, and kind words. The TTouch is, in my experience, the most mindful and impactful way you can communicate with your dog through touch. So, let’s break it down and give it a go!
The TTouch Technique

Think of TTouches as a conversation, a silent language where your hands do the talking. It’s a way to communicate with your dog on a cellular level, promoting relaxation, well-being, and a deeper understanding between you two.
The technique itself is incredibly simple. Imagine using both your hands in a gentle rhythm with your dog’s body. One hand provides a calming, supportive touch, while the other performs the actual TTouch. Here’s the key:

– Light Fingers, Gentle Circles: Keep your fingers slightly curved, using the soft pads of your fingertips. Imagine you’re tracing circles the size of a dime, starting at the 9 o’clock position and moving a full circle clockwise and another quarter of the way until you reach 12 o’clock. Refer to the image to the right.
– Listen to Your Dog’s Tempo: Is your pup all riled up? Match her energy with faster, light touches. As she calms down, slow your movements as well. It’s all about creating a calming rhythm.
– A Network of Touches: Move from spot to spot on your dog’s body, allowing the TTouch to work its magic. Remember, this is more than a massage, it’s a gentle conversation.
The Science Behind the TTouch

TTouch isn’t just about feel-good vibes (although there are plenty of those!). Practitioners suggest that these gentle circular motions stimulate the function and vitality of your dog’s cells, even activating new neural pathways in their brains.
Pretty amazing, right?
Here’s what you can expect with consistent TTouch practice:
-
- Reduced Stress Levels: Watch those worry lines on your pup’s face fade away as TTouch melts away their anxieties.
-
- A Calmer Heartbeat and Lower Blood Pressure: TTouch promotes physical relaxation as well as mental relaxation.
-
- Soothed Muscles: Does your dog seem tense or stiff? TTouch can help ease muscle tension and promote a sense of ease.
-
- Enhanced Body Awareness: Through TTouch, your dog becomes more in tune with his own body, leading to improved coordination and balance.
TTouch: A Holistic Approach

The TTouch takes a truly holistic approach. It addresses behavioral issues and impacts your dog’s overall well-being. It’s like giving your furry friend a spa day for her mind, body, and soul.
And guess what? The ears and tail get some special TTouch love too! These gentle techniques can be incredibly calming for hyperactive pups. Ear TTouches are especially helpful if your dog becomes nauseous. Does your pup experience car sickness? The ear TTouch can help!
