About the Author
Tom Mitchell
Tom Mitchell is an experienced animal behaviorist and author with more than 30 years of hands-on work—from family dogs and service animals to zoo species and Olympic equestrian teams.
Tom is the creator of the 1 Minute Dog Training method and a longtime advocate of humane, science-based training.
When his family’s Belgian Malinois, Roxy, was diagnosed with an inoperable abdominal mass, Tom immersed himself in veterinary oncology research and integrative care to support her recovery.
Three years later, Roxy is thriving and serves as a therapy dog—an outcome that inspired Tom to write How My Dog Beat Cancer: A Story of Hope & Healing, a practical, compassionate guide for pet parents. Tom has collaborated with renowned experts—including Linda Tellington-Jones of the Tellington TTouch® Method—and has authored multiple books that make training and animal care accessible to everyday families.
He lives with his family in Hawai’i, where dogs, learning, and hope are daily priorities.
Synopsis
How My Dog Beat Cancer: A Story of Hope & Healing blends true story and practical guide to help families navigate a canine cancer diagnosis with clarity and compassion.
Opening with Roxy’s survival story, the book moves from shock to strategy: recognizing early warning signs; understanding diagnostics, staging, and prognosis; and mapping next steps. It explains conventional treatments—surgery, chemotherapy, radiation—and introduces integrative options like acupuncture, medicinal mushrooms, CBD, and PEMF/BEMER therapy, with plain-language takeaways for comfort and quality of life.
Dedicated chapters cover nutrition for dogs with cancer, mind-body support, and advocacy skills—complete with quality-of-life checklists and “questions to ask your vet” prompts. An “On the Horizon” section translates emerging therapies (e.g., rapamycin, CAR-T, precision medicine, liquid biopsy) into what they may mean for real families. The book closes with end-of-life guidance and a vetted directory of treatment centers, financial aid, and support groups. Foreword by integrative veterinarian Dr. Wendy Asato, DVM.
This is a hopeful, actionable companion for one of the hardest journeys a pet parent may face.
